- 1/2 cup SemolinaOr currants
Directions
Irish Soda Bread is a traditional Irish quick bread that is easy to make and requires only a few basic ingredients. It gets its name from the use of baking soda as a leavening agent, rather than yeast. The result is a dense, hearty bread with a slightly sweet flavor and a crunchy crust.
Steps
1 Done | Preheat your oven to 220°C (425°F). |
2 Done | In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt, and baking soda. If you're using raisins or currants, mix them in now. |
3 Done | Gradually add the buttermilk to the dry ingredients, mixing until a dough forms. Be careful not to over-mix or knead the dough, as this will toughen the bread. |
4 Done | Shape the dough into a round loaf and place it on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. |
5 Done | Use a sharp knife to cut an "X" into the top of the loaf. This will help the bread to rise and bake evenly. |
6 Done | Bake the bread for 30-40 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the loaf sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom. |
7 Done | Remove the bread from the oven and transfer it to a wire rack to cool for at least 10-15 minutes before slicing and serving. |
